Milwaukee Mosaic Case Study, The Pilot Years,
The Planning Council conducted a case study of Milwaukee Mosaic, a community diversity project. Over the course of a four-year period (2006-2010), the Milwaukee Mosaic project matched 700 people from the community with racially/ethnically diverse partners in an effort to create social capital in Milwaukee. Social capital is described as “the invisible civic glue that holds a community together.” Community leaders were paired with individuals with the idea that each would open personal social networks to each other and experience transformation regarding diversity. Partially funded by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, Milwaukee Mosaic was intended to bring about individual change in the short term, and community and policy-level change in the long term. Participant outcomes from Milwaukee Mosaic include increased networking, personal transformation and a commitment to taking personal leadership roles in the community.
